Screen management during the school year

Screen management during the school year

A American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that there be a healthy balance between screen time and other activities, in the 4 areas below:

It is essential that all “areas” are filled during the child’s day to provide the foundations for a balanced and happy life.

Screens can be part of the day, but with responsibility.

Problems that can be caused by excessive screen time:

- sleep disorders

- posture problems

- difficulty concentrating

- depression and anxiety

- vision and hearing problems

- dependency

- others

Recommended maximum screen time by age

  • children under 2 years old: avoid exposure to screens, even passively;
  • between 2 and 5 years old: maximum 1 hour per day, always with adult supervision;
  • between 6 and 10 years old: maximum 1 to 2 hours per day, always with adult supervision;
  • between 11 and 18 years old: limit screen time to 2 to 3 hours a day.

Other important behaviors:

  • Do not use screens during meals;
  • Always disconnect 1 to 2 hours before bed;
  • Do not allow the child or adolescent to isolate themselves in their bedroom to use technology, encouraging use in common places, such as the living room.

Screen time can be a valuable educational tool. It is up to parents to propose educational games and monitor study, game or social time (and with whom). They are different times.

Furthermore, paying attention to the content is FUNDAMENTAL!

Keep your balance and have a great school year!
