Shall we celebrate National Portuguese Sign Language Day?

Today, November 15th, we celebrate National Portuguese Sign Language Day , did you know?

It is a very important date that highlights the commitment that all children and adults should have with social inclusion.

Once again we wanted to mark this date by giving some tips on how you can teach Sign Language to your little ones at home.

  • Start with the basics: Teach children how to spell their name. It's a really fun introduction to Sign Language.

  • Online resources: Look for videos available on the Internet to learn basic gestures. There are lots of them on Youtube!

  • Books and stories in Portuguese Sign Language: Look for children's books that include a translation into Portuguese Sign Language. This allows children to become familiar with the language in a playful, fun way and also have a good time with their family.

  • Try to interact with the Deaf Community: Participating in events in your city or groups where Portuguese Sign Language is used is a powerful way to learn. Children can meet and interact with members of the deaf community, which enriches the learning experience.

  • Encourage patience and respect: Teach children the importance of being patient and respectful when interacting with deaf people. Empathy and respect are fundamental to effective communication.

By adopting these tips in children's education, we are taking important steps towards inclusion and accessibility. We believe that inclusion starts early and that, by promoting understanding and respect for linguistic diversity, we are building a more inclusive and accessible future for everyone.

Join us on this journey of inclusion! Celebrate National Portuguese Sign Language Day and learn some gestures on our Instagram page.
